Some apps, such as most Adobe software and a wide range of STEM software and other utilities, still haven’t been optimized for Apple’s chips, and you can’t run Windows using Boot Camp or virtualization software such as Parallels Desktop. If you want to spend less than $500 on a mini PC, you’re better off getting one that runs Google’s Chrome OS instead of Windows.

The best desktop PC for gaming

I don't know if pasting them here ruins the game or if this was correct. It’s still running Windows 10, which is unlikely to be an issue, but the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 inside isn’t the most powerful around. Still, it’s likely to be a dependable workhorse for gaming and video editing work, but the 6GB of video RAM won’t go too far for creative professionals. As we said though, the Microsoft Surface Studio 2 is a few years old now and it shows in the components. The CPU is still a decent model, but you can easily get cheaper and faster options these days.

Chrome OS simply runs better on low-end processors and less memory, and because Chrome OS relies primarily on cloud storage, a tiny SSD for storage isn’t a problem, either. The CTL Chromebox CBX2 is our favorite cheap mini PC because it’s fast enough for basic work, it has plenty of ports, and it provides a good amount of memory and storage for the price. It’s also a decent option for professional photo and video editing, though if you plan to use this system for professional Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, or Premiere work, consider upgrading to 16 GB of memory and buying a bigger SSD.

Windows, MacOS, ChromeOS, or Linux?

Shortly after Intel announced its 11th generation processors, Dell upgraded its Alienware to take advantage of them. We haven't had the chance to go hands-on with the Alienware R12, but we did look at the R11, and we're confident enough in the Alienware brand to conclude the R12 is a beast. Choosing between a desktop and a laptop comes down to portability and comfort. You can take a laptop nearly anywhere, but they're not as comfortable to use as desktops with a larger screen.

We’ve tested Intel’s upcoming Phantom Canyon NUC, which runs on an 11th-generation quad-core Intel Core i7 processor and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 GPU and will cost at least $1,400 once you’ve added memory, storage, and an operating system. The performance is great for the size, it has a nice selection of ports and plenty of them, and its fan isn’t as loud as those in regular NUC models. But a quad-core processor may struggle to run games made with the new Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 consoles in mind, and the RTX 2060 is already a two-year-old midrange GPU. A prebuilt gaming desktop from Dell, HP, Lenovo, or other, smaller PC builders will be larger, but it will also cost about the same amount, perform as well or better, and age more gracefully. Mini PCs are available for less than $250, but Windows PCs in that price range have unusably slow processors and less memory and storage than most people need.

Those familiar with the genre should find something new and engaging to enjoy here, and newcomers will get a glimpse into what’s possible from the medium. It’s certainly an interesting experiment and one other developers could benefit from looking into. The PM02 was SilverStone’s rehashed version of the PM01, a case that received critical acclaim from GamersNexus for its airflow. We still use the PM01 for one of our render machines today, but that’s because the PM02 wasn’t suitable as a replacement.
